Google Tests AI-First Homepage Replacing Search Button

Google is testing a redesigned, AI-first homepage for a select group of users, primarily those not signed into a Google Account. The new layout removes the classic Google Search button and replaces it with three AI-focused shortcuts: Create images, Ask about files, and Brainstorm. An AI Mode button is also integrated directly into the search field, though the I'm Feeling Lucky button remains.

Testing shows that the Brainstorm and Ask about files features—which allows users to attach PDFs or documents—function without an account. However, the Create images feature requires users to sign in. The layout has appeared across multiple browsers, including Chrome, Microsoft Edge, and Perplexity's Comet. Google has not confirmed the scope of the rollout, and the changes appear to be an A/B test limited by session, location, or account.

This shift toward AI-driven tools comes amid criticism from Cloudflare. The cybersecurity company recently reported that Google's AI integration is spreading misinformation through AI Overviews and driving web traffic away from external websites.
