Kamala Harris Joins Abdul El-Sayed for Michigan Senate Campaign

Former Vice President Kamala Harris will campaign in Michigan next week alongside Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed. The pair will make their first joint public appearance Tuesday at a roundtable focused on Black maternal health. Harris also plans to meet with local officials and the president of the NAACP Detroit branch to help secure Democratic control of the U.S. Senate.

El-Sayed, a physician and former health department head, currently holds a narrow lead over Republican opponent Mike Rogers, with a recent Hill/Emerson College Polling survey placing him at 48 percent to Rogers' 46 percent. The Cook Political Report rates the race as a toss-up. Tensions peaked recently when the Rogers campaign withdrew from a scheduled debate with a Detroit Fox affiliate, citing media bias regarding moderator Roop Raj; El-Sayed attended the event and appeared beside an empty podium.

In Washington, Democratic senators including Kirsten Gillibrand and Chris Murphy met with El-Sayed to signal party unity. Despite El-Sayed's vocal criticism of Israel, which Vice President JD Vance has used to characterize him as "evil," some Democratic leaders expressed optimism about his ability to energize the base. This divide is mirrored among Michigan's Jewish voters; while some rabbis have threatened to withhold support, more than 500 Jewish leaders and voters signed an open letter urging support for El-Sayed to check the power of Donald Trump.

El-Sayed maintains that voters are primarily concerned with economic issues such as gas and groceries. He is also seeking common ground with Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, despite previous statements that he would not back Schumer as leader.
