Big Yellow Group Reviews Sale Options After Ancora Pressure
Big Yellow Group is evaluating strategic options and a potential sale after US activist investor Ancora Holdings disclosed a 4% stake in the company.
The Big Yellow Group, a London-listed self-storage operator, is reviewing strategic options and potential sales following pressure from US-based activist investor Ancora Holdings Group. Ancora disclosed a stake of more than 4% in the company, arguing that shares are trading at a 40% discount to net asset value and are at their deepest historical discount to intrinsic value. The investor values the shares at £12.36 and urges the board to solicit global interest from strategic and financial acquirers.
Ancora highlighted the company's 99% freehold portfolio and the fact that 70–75% of its EBITDA is generated by London-based stores as primary competitive advantages. Beyond a full sale, the investor suggested divesting non-core assets or selling Armadillo to enhance value. Big Yellow shares rose 5.8% to 845p following the disclosure, supported by falling UK gilt yields and a broader rally in real estate shares.
Big Yellow confirmed it has met with Ancora and is evaluating options to maximize shareholder value. The company has a history of rejecting low offers, having ended sale talks with Blackstone in December and other parties in October because the valuations did not reflect the company's full potential. The stock had previously hit multi-year lows due to economic uncertainty and a weak housing market.
