Joe Vinson Takes Lead in Escambia County Commission Race
Nonpartisan challenger Joe Vinson now leads incumbent Ashlee Hofberger by 19 votes in a tight race triggering a mandatory machine recount in Escambia County.
The race for the Escambia County Commission District 4 seat in Florida has shifted following a review of provisional and mail-in ballots by the Escambia County Canvassing Board. Joe Vinson, a non-party affiliate, now holds a 19-vote lead over incumbent Republican Ashlee Hofberger, with unofficial results showing Vinson at 50.04% and Hofberger at 49.96%.
The lead represents a reversal from initial unofficial results on November 4, which showed Hofberger leading Vinson by only three votes out of nearly 26,000 cast. Because the margin remains within 0.5%, Escambia County Supervisor of Elections Robert Bender announced a mandatory machine recount will begin on Saturday, November 7.
Under Florida law, a manual hand recount of overvotes and undervotes will be triggered if the margin remains within 0.25% after the machine process. A final winner may not be determined until after November 13, as the elections office continues to process outstanding military and overseas ballots.
