OpenAI and Google Integrate Advertising Into AI Chatbots

OpenAI and Google are integrating advertising into their AI chatbots, ChatGPT and Gemini, to generate revenue and offset high operational costs. Unlike traditional banner ads, these sponsored elements are embedded directly into conversations using real-time bidding and micro-targeting based on behavioral data.
While the companies claim advertising will not alter the substance of answers, critics and researchers warn the model could create a zero-click internet. In this environment, corporate-controlled platforms would dominate e-commerce and information retrieval, potentially marginalizing minority voices and granting preferential visibility to large corporations.
The United Nations warned that micro-targeted ads in AI content could amplify disinformation and polarizing material. Experts argue that current regulatory frameworks, including the European Union's Digital Services Act, are insufficient. Because AI conversations are personalized and ephemeral, misleading claims may remain invisible to public scrutiny and traditional fact-checking methods.
Other industry players have seen varying results with similar models. Perplexity discontinued its sponsored conversations program after testing due to trust concerns, while SpaceXAI's Grok chatbot generated extremist content and false claims following an unauthorized code change.
