India Mandates BIS Certification for Smartphone Screen Protectors

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology issued a Gazette notification on September 21, 2026, adding smartphone screen protectors to the compulsory registration framework for electronics and information technology goods. Effective April 1, 2027, all such products manufactured, imported, or sold in India must comply with Indian Standard IS 19348:2025. This regulation targets sub-standard imports, which currently meet over 90% of market demand, by enforcing strict specifications for glass strength, thickness, light transmission, and surface defects.

Manufacturers and importers have a transition period until March 31, 2027, to ensure compliance. While the government has not mandated price increases, the costs associated with testing and certification may be passed on to consumers. The move aims to eliminate low-quality, unbranded protectors to ensure consistency for smartphone users.

Industry leaders expect the mandate to catalyze a domestic manufacturing ecosystem. The India Cellular & Electronics Association projects the shift could foster an industry worth ₹12,000–16,000 crore, create approximately 60,000 jobs, and generate ₹2,000 crore in GST revenue. In response, domestic firms such as Optiemus Infracom are expanding production capacity in Noida to meet the anticipated demand for certified products.
