Republican Donors Back Democrat Terrence Davis in South Dakota Race
Democratic candidate Terrence Davis received financial support from Republicans concerned by nominee Heather Baxter's push to ban automatic vote tabulating equipment.
Democratic candidate Terrence Davis for South Dakota secretary of state has received campaign contributions from several Republicans ahead of the November 3 general election. This cross-party support follows a September endorsement of Davis by the Republican incumbent, Monae Johnson, who lost her party nomination to Representative Heather Baxter.
Republican donors, including former legislator David Knudson, cited Baxter's advocacy for hand-counting election results and her criticism of vote-counting machines as the primary reasons for supporting the Democratic nominee. Baxter has pushed for legislation to prohibit automatic vote tabulating equipment, claiming she saw issues with the certification process and equipment compliance with state and federal law.
Campaign finance reports indicate a significant disparity in available funds between the two candidates. While Baxter raised approximately $80,000, she has only $1,900 remaining. In contrast, Davis raised about $53,500 and maintains a balance of $57,600.
