India Data Centre Capacity to Grow Five-Fold by 2030
Crisil Ratings projects India's data centre capacity will reach 7.5 gigawatts by 2030, attracting over Rs 3 lakh crore in investments.
India's data centre installed capacity is projected to increase five-fold to approximately 7.5 gigawatts by March 2030. According to a report by Crisil Ratings, this expansion will attract investments exceeding Rs 3 lakh crore over the next four financial years, fueled by enterprise digitalisation, rising data consumption, and the computing demands of generative artificial intelligence.
Approximately 75% of the upcoming 6 gigawatts of capacity will be concentrated in Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Visakhapatnam. This concentration makes timely transmission augmentation and grid connectivity critical for the sector's success. India maintains a competitive advantage over other Asia-Pacific markets, with development costs roughly 20% lower and rentals 30-35% lower.
While nearly half of the new capacity is already committed under long-term contracts of 15-20 years, the report warns of risks associated with high customer concentration. Hyperscalers are expected to control 75-80% of leased capacity by fiscal 2030.
