Romania Retail Sales Grow 0.1% in August
Romania's retail sales grew by 0.1% in August, marking the first year-on-year increase in a year despite a broader annual decline.
The National Institute of Statistics and Geography reported that Romania's retail sales grew by 0.1% year-on-year in August on a working-day-adjusted basis. This growth marks the first increase in a year and reverses a 6.1% decrease recorded in July. On a monthly basis, August sales climbed 2.3%.
Non-food product sales rose by 0.2%, while food product sales fell by 1.9%. Automotive fuel sales also showed signs of recovery, with the monthly decline easing to 0.3% from a 4.8% drop in the previous month.
Despite the August recovery, the overall trend for 2026 remains negative. Retail sales volume for the period from January to August 2026 fell by 5% in unadjusted data and 5.1% when adjusted for seasonality and working days compared to the same period in 2025.
