Samsung and SK Hynix Evaluate Chinese Chipmaking Equipment

South Korean chipmakers Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix have evaluated etching equipment from Shanghai-based Advanced Micro-Fabrication Equipment (AMEC) for potential use at their Chinese factories. The firms began these trials approximately two years ago to secure alternative suppliers as United States export controls shifted from validated end user status to annual licenses.

The companies aim to protect their production lines from potential U.S. restrictions that could extend to the servicing and repair of Western tools. While Chinese equipment is typically 20% to 30% cheaper than foreign alternatives, it continues to trail behind in inspection systems and advanced lithography.

Samsung Electronics has denied the activity, stating it has not tested AMEC equipment for use at its China factory and had not considered doing so. Despite the denial, the trials offer AMEC a path toward commercial validation from global industry leaders.
