Mitchell City Council Debates Regional Law Enforcement Complex Proposal

The Mitchell City Council met on August 3, 2026, to discuss a proposal from Davison County to create a regional law enforcement complex. The planned facility would integrate the Mitchell Police Department with the Davison County Sheriff's Department, the county jail, and court services into a single hub.

Council members expressed mixed views on the partnership. Member Shaun Davis suggested the shared center could improve efficiency, while Council President Kevin McCardle highlighted a lack of essential project details, noting that blueprints and cost estimates are currently unavailable. One potential site for the complex is a 26.68-acre city-owned lot near Mitchell Middle School, though some officials raised concerns about placing a jail near a school.

Other public safety leaders weighed in on the operational impact. Fire Department Chief Shannon Sandoval opposed moving the fire department from its current Public Safety building, arguing that the relocation would compromise response times in south and central Mitchell. Police Chief Dean Knippling is continuing to evaluate how the city can integrate into the project and secure the necessary funding.
