Francis Fukuyama Releases Memoir Clarifying End of History Thesis

Political theorist Francis Fukuyama is releasing a memoir titled "In the Realm of the Last Man," scheduled for publication by Farrar, Straus & Giroux on September 8. In the book, Fukuyama addresses the widespread misunderstanding of his 1989 "end of history" thesis, arguing that the current rise of populist demagogues and restlessness within liberal democracies actually vindicates his earlier warnings regarding the "last man," a decadent figure driven by boredom and rage.

Currently a senior fellow at Stanford University's Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies, Fukuyama uses the memoir to reflect on his intellectual transition from a neoconservative to a critic of extreme deregulation and military interventionism. He characterizes the current global political climate as a cyclical system in which societies oscillate between the peace and prosperity of liberal democracy and a destructive return to conflict and authoritarianism.
