Senators Demand Probe Into USDA Official Over Fire Resource Diversion

Three Democratic senators are demanding an investigation into Michael Boren, the Undersecretary of Agriculture for Natural Resources and Environment, over allegations that he misused his office to divert firefighting resources to a fire near his private ranch in Idaho. In a letter to Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins, Senators Ron Wyden, Amy Klobuchar, and Martin Heinrich alleged inappropriate interference during the response to the Cabin Creek Fire in July.

The senators claim Boren pressured staff to deploy additional aircraft and personnel to a seven-acre fire that posed no significant threat. They argue this action potentially diverted scarce resources away from larger, higher-priority wildfires. Senator Amy Klobuchar stated that such political interference jeopardizes lives, property, and federal resources.

The United States Department of Agriculture denied that Boren pressured leadership, asserting that he simply reported a fire near his property and that monitoring events he oversees is standard procedure. The senators have requested a detailed accounting of safeguards and a full response by September 10.
