OpenAI Launches Global Initiative for AI-Driven Cyber Defense

OpenAI President and Co-Founder Greg Brockman issued an open letter titled “A Call to Action on Cyber Defense,” warning that a limited window exists to strengthen cybersecurity before AI-enabled attacks become widespread and sophisticated. The initiative urges governments, technology partners, and cybersecurity firms to prioritize AI-driven defenses to protect critical infrastructure and public services.

OpenAI advocates for a tiered approach using both low-cost and frontier models to address long-standing security weaknesses, such as outdated software and misconfigurations, at a scale previously impossible. The effort emphasizes that sharing tools and verified fixes allows the work of one organization to protect many others.

Palo Alto Networks, Mate Security, and ServiceNow joined as first-day signatories. While the broader initiative focuses on general AI integration, Mate Security is specifically developing agentic cyber defense infrastructure to enable autonomous reasoning and investigation within structured procedures, and ServiceNow is focusing on the coordination and remediation of security fixes.
