Pakistan Warns Social Media Platforms Over Militant Content

The Government of Pakistan warned major social media platforms on December 11, 2025, that it may implement stricter enforcement measures or legal actions if they do not crack down on accounts linked to militant groups. During a news conference in Islamabad, officials identified dozens of accounts on X operating from India and Afghanistan that promote extremist content and support outlawed groups, including the Baloch Liberation Army and Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan.

Deputy Interior Minister Talal Chaudhry stated that while Facebook, YouTube, Telegram, and WhatsApp have begun assisting in identifying these accounts, cooperation from X has remained limited. The government is demanding that these companies establish local offices and use artificial intelligence to detect mirrored accounts that spread hate speech and terrorism.

Deputy Law Minister Aqeel Malik suggested that Pakistan could adopt a regulatory approach similar to Brazil's by fining platforms that remain non-compliant. Chaudhry specifically accused the Afghan government of providing patronage and sanctuary to individuals using these platforms to spread terror content against Pakistan.
