Bank of Japan Board Member Urges Timely Rate Hikes

Junko Koeda argues the Bank of Japan should not be overly cautious about raising interest rates due to significant inflation risks.

Bank of Japan board member Junko Koeda stated on October 15 that the central bank should avoid excessive caution regarding interest rate increases. Speaking to business leaders in Kumamoto, Koeda argued that significant upside risks to inflation justify policy tightening, noting that financial conditions remain accommodative and higher borrowing costs have not hindered household or business activities.

Koeda indicated that broad price increases and steady wage growth suggest underlying inflation is anchoring around the bank's 2 percent target. She advocated for the Bank of Japan to adjust interest rates in a timely manner based on economic and price data.

These comments follow a recent decision by the Bank of Japan to raise its key rate to a 31-year high last month. The board member's stance fuels market expectations that further policy tightening could occur as early as December.
