Danielle Smith Seeks Quebec Alliance to Oppose Alberta Separatism

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith visited Quebec City from June 2 to June 3, 2026, to establish an alliance with Quebec Premier Christine Fréchette. The leaders discussed asserting provincial autonomy within Canada, developing an east-west energy corridor, and enhancing ties in aerospace, defense, and critical minerals. Smith also expressed interest in modeling Alberta's immigration policy after Quebec's system to reduce federal control from Ottawa.

These diplomatic efforts coincide with a rising sovereignty movement in Alberta. Smith announced a referendum for October 19, asking voters whether the province should remain in Canada or begin a legal process for separation. To discourage secession, Smith is preparing a government report, due in August, detailing the financial risks. She estimates that independence would require nearly $400 billion in startup costs—approximately $80,000 per resident—and annual recurring expenses between $25 billion and $50 billion for national debt shares, NATO obligations, and new border infrastructure.

The political climate remains volatile, with separatist activists attempting to remove Smith from the leadership of the United Conservative Party.
