Apple Opens Siri to Third-Party AI in iOS 27
Apple is launching an Extensions framework in iOS 27 that allows users to integrate multiple third-party AI chatbots into Siri and Apple Intelligence.
Apple Inc. is overhauling its artificial intelligence strategy by introducing an "Extensions" framework in iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27. This system ends the exclusive integration previously held by OpenAI's ChatGPT, allowing users to route Siri queries and Apple Intelligence tools—including writing and image generation—to rival models such as Google Gemini and Anthropic's Claude. Users can specify their preferred AI "brain" through a settings panel and may assign distinct voices to each model for audible distinction.
To facilitate this, Apple is creating a dedicated AI section within the App Store. This marketplace will allow users to browse and install AI integrations, enabling Apple to monetize the services by taking a commission on third-party subscriptions. Parallel to these extensions, Apple is maintaining a multi-year partnership with Google to base next-generation foundation models on Gemini technology, reportedly backed by an annual license of roughly $1 billion.
The revamp includes the development of a standalone Siri app featuring a chat-like interface and conversation history. The shift follows criticism of early "personal intelligence" features and a $250 million settlement regarding exaggerated Apple Intelligence claims. To lead these marketing efforts, Apple hired former Google executive Lilian Rincon as vice president of product marketing of AI. These features are expected to be previewed at the Worldwide Developers Conference on June 8, 2026, with a stable release likely by late 2026 alongside new hardware.
