High Court Dismisses Prince Harry's Lawsuit Against Associated Newspapers

A UK High Court judge dismissed all 97 claims of unlawful information gathering brought by Prince Harry and other public figures against Associated Newspapers Limited.

Justice Matthew Nicklin of the High Court dismissed all 97 allegations of unlawful information gathering brought by Prince Harry and other high-profile claimants, including Elton John, Elizabeth Hurley, and Baroness Doreen Lawrence. The claimants alleged that Associated Newspapers Limited, publisher of the Daily Mail, used voicemail interception, phone hacking, and "blagging" to obtain personal data between the 1990s and 2010s.

In a 436-page ruling delivered on July 7, 2026, Justice Nicklin stated that "suspicion is not enough" and that the claimants failed to prove the unlawful acquisition of information. He noted that journalists provided credible, lawful explanations for their sources and that some claims were filed too late. The ruling followed an 11-week trial and legal costs exceeding £50 million.

Associated Newspapers described the verdict as a "magnificent vindication" of its journalism and a "crushing victory" for press freedom. Editor-in-Chief Paul Dacre called the legal action "trumped-up." Conversely, Prince Harry and Baroness Lawrence condemned the decision as a "complete and obvious whitewash." Prince Harry also criticized the judge's impartiality, citing Justice Nicklin's previous work as a barrister for the Daily Mirror.

The legal battle coincided with Prince Harry's return to the UK for Invictus Games events. His visit was marked by a dispute with Buckingham Palace, which withdrew an offer of accommodation citing staffing shortages and constitutional concerns regarding the court case.
