Foreign investors, entrepreneurs, and executives are increasingly conducting tech pilgrimages to China to study advancements in humanoid robotics, artificial intelligence, and electric vehicles. This trend is driven by Western fears of a "China shock 2.0," where Chinese firms seize the lead in advanced manufacturing. In response, the Government of China is actively promoting industrial tourism, designating over 140 official demonstration sites to showcase its state-backed investment models.

A cottage industry of high-priced tech tours has emerged, with some programs costing up to $15,000. High-profile visitors include German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who viewed humanoid robots in Hangzhou, and U.S. investment firms such as Capital Group and Thrive Capital. Shenzhen has become a primary hub for these activities, seeing a 70% increase in foreign visitors last year as it prepares to host the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum in November 2026.

China's technological growth is supported by data from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, which indicates the nation accounted for 97 percent of global humanoid robot shipments in the first half of 2026. This shift is accompanied by a broader increase in soft power; the 2026 Global Soft Power Index ranked China second globally, while recent visa-free policies contributed to 22.9 million inbound foreign arrivals in the first half of the year. While some observers note that non-Chinese companies still hold the majority of global market share and advanced intellectual property, the demand for first-hand access to Chinese innovation remains high.
