Pentagon Urges NATO Allies to Tone Down Russia Rhetoric
The United States Department of Defense asked Baltic allies to moderate public language about Russia to avoid undermining continental security and diplomatic efforts.
The United States Department of Defense has privately urged NATO allies, specifically Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, to moderate their public rhetoric regarding the threat posed by Russia. Pentagon officials, including policy chief Elbridge Colby, argued that describing the Russian government as cornered or like a rat constitutes poking the adversary and undermines security across the continent.
These requests align with efforts by the Trump administration to negotiate an end to the war in Ukraine. The U.S. strategy involves applying pressure on Ukraine to stop attacks on Russian energy infrastructure while offering sanctions relief to Russia.
The guidance arrives as the U.S. reviews troop levels in Europe and encourages European nations to increase their own defense spending. Some European officials have expressed confusion over the request, citing intensified Russian sabotage campaigns, including arson plots in Nuremberg and a drone attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport in Germany.
