U.S. Stocks Decline as Chinese Oil Export Suspension Spikes Prices

U.S. stock markets fell Thursday as crude oil futures surged following reports that Chinese refiners suspended oil product exports to preserve domestic stocks.

U.S. stock markets declined on Thursday, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average falling 0.6%, the S&P 500 dropping 0.3%, and the Nasdaq sliding 0.2%. The downturn coincided with a more than 2% surge in crude oil futures after reports emerged that Chinese refiners suspended oil product exports for October to preserve domestic stocks. This shift caused oil producer stocks to gain while banking and housing stocks suffered significant losses.

Market participants remained cautious ahead of the monthly jobs report scheduled for release on Friday by the United States Department of Labor. However, a separate report from the agency released Thursday showed that initial jobless claims for the week ending September 26 unexpectedly decreased to 197,000. This figure defied economist expectations, which had predicted an increase to 200,000.
