India Opposition MPs March to Election Commission Over Voter Rolls

Opposition MPs will march to the Election Commission on October 6 to demand the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged electoral roll irregularities.

Opposition leaders in India are demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar following allegations of unilateral decision-making and the illegal modification of voter enrollment forms. Samajwadi Party MP Dharmendra Yadav claimed that no election under Kumar's supervision has been fair, accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party of turning constitutional institutions into puppets.

As part of a broader Save Democracy March announced by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, opposition MPs from the INDIA bloc will march from Parliament House to the Election Commission on October 6. This protest is the start of a larger campaign including district-level pad-yatras and rallies through November to identify an estimated 13.5 crore missing voters. Opposition leaders also plan to meet President Droupadi Murmu in the second week of October.

The Supreme Court of India recently refused to grant an interim order to suspend Kumar but issued notices to the center and the Election Commission. Chief Justice Surya Kant clarified that the court had not approved any modified version of Form 6 used for voter enrollment. The court is now examining allegations that Kumar made 14 crucial decisions unilaterally despite objections from other Election Commissioners.
