African Union Envoy Meets Sudanese Leaders to Broker Peace

African Union envoy Mohamed Belaiche met with Sudanese leadership in Khartoum to coordinate a ceasefire and plan a high-level diplomatic visit to the conflict-torn nation.

African Union Special Envoy for Sudan Mohamed Belaiche conducted a series of diplomatic meetings in Khartoum on July 8 and 9, 2026, to address the ongoing conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. Belaiche first met with Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, Chairman of Sudan's Transitional Sovereign Council, to discuss de-escalating the violence and the necessity of a ceasefire to facilitate an inclusive political process.

On Thursday, Belaiche met with Sudanese Prime Minister Kamil Idris to establish joint coordination mechanisms aimed at enhancing stability and alleviating humanitarian suffering. During these talks, Belaiche announced that the African Union plans a high-level visit to Sudan in the coming days to help formulate a shared vision for peace.

These diplomatic efforts coincide with the African Union Commission's security and political assessment to reopen its liaison office in Khartoum, which has remained closed since the war began in April 2023. This push for stability follows the resumption of operations in the capital by the Sudanese government and United Nations agencies in January 2026.
