Eurozone Manufacturing Production Hits Fastest Growth Since 2022

Eurozone manufacturing production grew at its fastest rate since March 2022 in July, though performance diverged sharply between German growth and French contraction.

The S&P Global Eurozone Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index rose to 51.9 in July from 51.4 in June, marking the strongest improvement in factory operating conditions since April. While the region saw its fastest production expansion since March 2022, the growth was largely fueled by the completion of backlogged orders rather than new business intakes. Overall factory employment and purchasing volumes continued to decline for a second consecutive month.

Regional performance diverged significantly. Germany recorded its strongest production growth in nearly four and a half years, with its PMI rising to 52.2 from 50.3. This surge was driven by export sales and a decline in input cost inflation. Conversely, France's manufacturing sector returned to contraction as its PMI dropped to 49.8 from 51.2. French firms cited the Middle East conflict, weak client confidence, and price pressures as primary drivers for the steepest annual decline in export demand.

Italy's growth slowed to a four-month low with a PMI of 51.3, reflecting subdued demand and business hesitancy. Across the Eurozone, business confidence reached its highest level since February and inflation eased to a five-month low. However, economists warn that recent spikes in oil and gas prices may erode confidence and trigger demand destruction, particularly in France, while supply chain bottlenecks in the electronics industry persist.
