Latvia Detains Citizens for Spying for Russian GRU
Latvian security services detained two citizens for allegedly spying for Russia's GRU by monitoring NATO forces and military bases.
The State Security Service of Latvia, in coordination with the Defence Intelligence and Security Service, detained two Latvian citizens on June 28 for allegedly spying for the GRU, Russia's military intelligence service. The suspects are accused of gathering classified information on the Latvian defense system, the activities of NATO allied forces, and the support Latvia provides to Ukraine.
Authorities allege the pair monitored aircraft movements and military radar systems. One suspect reportedly used a private aircraft to conduct reconnaissance and take aerial photographs of the Ādaži military base. Beyond intelligence gathering, the security services claim the couple performed activities intended to support Russian reconnaissance and sabotage groups operating within Latvia.
Criminal proceedings began on June 27. Following the arrests, authorities conducted searches at three separate locations in Riga and the Ādaži Municipality. The suspects remain in custody as the investigation continues.
