UN Peacekeepers Deploy After Attacks Kill 60 in South Sudan

The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) is deploying long-duration peacekeeping patrols to Tonj North county in Warrap state following near-simultaneous attacks by armed groups on August 10, 2026. The violence resulted in more than 60 civilian deaths, 50 injuries, and the widespread looting of cattle and property.

In Udier village, which has become a refuge for over 36,000 displaced people, local leaders reported the deliberate burning of homes and the looting of hospitals and schools. UNMISS is currently coordinating with government officials to de-escalate tensions and facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid to the affected populations.

Beyond Warrap state, peacekeepers have also increased patrols in eastern Upper Nile state in response to clashes between government and opposition armed groups. Acting head of UNMISS Graham Maitland warned that this intercommunal violence targets vulnerable communities and risks triggering a cycle of revenge attacks.
