India Plans to Quadruple Port Capacity by 2047
Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal announced plans to quadruple India's port capacity by 2047 to support GDP growth and expand international trade.
Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal announced that India intends to quadruple its port capacity by 2047 to sustain its position as the world's fastest-growing large economy. Speaking in Rotterdam, Netherlands, Goyal noted that while India doubled its capacity over the last decade, further expansion is required to support projected GDP growth and international trade.
Goyal identified the Port of Rotterdam as a key partner for collaboration on maritime infrastructure, operational efficiency, carbon capture, and green energy. He highlighted the Sagarmala initiative as the primary vehicle for improving the national maritime ecosystem.
To support these infrastructure goals, the government plans to establish India's largest maritime institute of excellence in Mumbai. This facility will focus on training highly skilled seafarers for the global shipping industry.
