Elections Alberta Opens Mail-In Voting for Independence Referendum

Elections Alberta announced on July 24 that a citizen petition seeking Alberta's independence from Canada has met the required signature threshold. Chief Electoral Officer Gordon McClure estimated the petition contains 222,597 verified signatures, surpassing the 177,732 required to trigger a referendum.

While the petition met the quantitative threshold, the process remains legally contested. The Court of King’s Bench previously quashed the decision to approve the petition application. A Court of Appeal justice issued a partial stay on June 29 to allow signature verification, but further steps in the initiative process are stayed pending a final ruling from the Court of Appeal.

Despite the legal stay, Elections Alberta has opened applications for vote-by-mail special ballots for the referendum scheduled for October 19, 2026. Eligible electors may apply online until October 9. The referendum features 10 questions, with the final question asking if the Government of Alberta should begin the legal process under the Canadian Constitution to hold a binding referendum on separation. The result of this specific question will not be binding. Advance voting is scheduled for October 13 to 17.
