Satya Nadella Calls for AI Reset to End Monopolies

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has called for a fundamental reset of the artificial intelligence industry to prevent a small group of frontier model-builders from monopolizing the technology. In a series of interviews, including one with The Wall Street Journal, Nadella argued that a handful of companies should not dictate the evolution of safety risks, job displacement, or the global learning process. He emphasized that the industry must move beyond narratives to earn social permission through concrete action.

To implement this vision of democratization, Microsoft has launched a suite of low-cost AI models and the Copilot Cowork agent, which enables users to select between different underlying models based on cost and performance. The company is also considering hosting DeepSeek, a low-cost Chinese AI provider. This shift toward commoditization could trigger a price war for frontier labs and major partners such as OpenAI and Anthropic, as well as competitors like Google.

Nadella further addressed the impact of AI on the workforce, arguing that the technology should be used to reorganize jobs and augment human expertise rather than simply eliminating white-collar positions. He cautioned against the contradiction of building massive data centers while claiming that AI will inevitably destroy professional roles, suggesting instead that businesses redesign workflows for effective human-AI collaboration.
