Cochin Shipyard Begins Construction of Six Indian Navy Missile Vessels

The Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) has commenced construction of six Next Generation Missile Vessels (NGMV) for the Indian Navy, marking the company's first venture into building weapon-intensive platforms for the navy. The project began with a steel cutting ceremony for the second vessel, BY-532, on September 17, 2026, followed by the keel-laying ceremony for the first vessel, BY-531, on September 18.

These high-speed vessels are designed to reach speeds of 33 knots with a crew of 80. They will be equipped with surface-to-surface missile systems, anti-missile defense systems, and advanced air surveillance and fire control radars. The ships are intended for offensive maritime strike operations against warships and land targets, as well as defensive protection of offshore development areas and sea-denial operations in maritime choke points.

Executing a contract signed on March 30, 2023, the program utilizes indigenously developed sensors and weapons. The project aligns with the Government of India's Aatmanirbhar Bharat, Make in India, and Make for the World initiatives, which aim to increase domestic defense production and enhance the Indian Navy's combat capabilities within the Indian Ocean Region.
