SpaceXAI Considers Buying Startup Data to Train Grok
SpaceXAI is exploring the purchase of operational records from defunct startups to expand training data for its Grok AI models.
The AI unit of SpaceX, SpaceXAI, is holding internal discussions to purchase customer and operational records from troubled or defunct startups. This strategy aims to diversify the training data for Grok AI models, moving beyond the previous reliance on X posts and internal AI tutors.
This shift follows an August directive from Elon Musk, who informed staff that Grok would be trained on the total sum of SpaceX information. The approach mirrors a previous attempt by Google to acquire records from the collapsed airline Spirit.
The initiative faces significant regulatory challenges in Europe. The Irish Data Protection Commission has been investigating SpaceXAI since April 2025 regarding the lawful processing of public posts from users in the European Union and European Economic Area. Legal experts are questioning whether user consent transfers during database acquisitions and if such data processing aligns with reasonable user expectations under European law.
