Pakistani Security Forces Kill Over 50 Protesters in PoK

The Government of Pakistan launched a severe crackdown on protesters in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK), resulting in more than 50 deaths and hundreds of injuries. The unrest, which began on June 5, was triggered by soaring fuel prices, inflation, and rising electricity tariffs, though it is rooted in deeper grievances regarding economic exploitation and political subordination.

Violence intensified on August 2 in Muzaffarabad, where security forces opened fire on civilians in the Plate area, killing three people and injuring several others. These clashes occurred ahead of the second phase of assembly polls, leading many residents and first-time voters to boycott the elections. In response to the unrest, the Pakistani state implemented a continuous internet and cellular communication shutdown across the territory.

India's Ministry of External Affairs condemned the actions, with spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stating the crackdown resulted in over 40 deaths and criticizing the Pakistani Defence Minister for branding peaceful civilians as enemies. Analysis from the publication Jacobin described the region's autonomy as a sham, alleging that Islamabad manipulates elections to maintain a puppet government.

Separately, in the Swat Valley of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, a suicide bomber killed 14 people, including five police officers, during a peace rally in Kabal on Sunday evening. Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan claimed responsibility for the attack, which occurred amid a broader spike in terrorism that has seen over 3,000 incidents since January.
