AI Skills Now Critical for UK Entry-Level Jobs

AI proficiency requirements for entry-level jobs in the United Kingdom have nearly tripled since 2025, risking the creation of a two-tier labor market.

Artificial intelligence skills have become a critical requirement for young job seekers in the United Kingdom. Data from recruitment platforms Adzuna and Indeed show that entry-level job postings mentioning AI have nearly tripled since early 2025. This shift is most prominent in highly exposed sectors such as banking, legal, and software development, where one in six vacancies now require AI proficiency.

Employers are expanding these requirements beyond technical roles, integrating AI skills into traditional positions like sales representatives and assistants. This trend indicates a broader shift in how the labor market values technical literacy for new entrants.

The British Chambers of Commerce warned that these requirements create a "very real threat" of a two-tier labor market. The organization cautioned that individuals lacking AI skills may be excluded from the toughest job market in decades, further widening the gap between skilled and unskilled young workers.
