INEC Declares Winners in Multiple Nigerian Senatorial By-Elections
The Independent National Electoral Commission declared winners for by-elections in Ondo, Rivers, Kano, Enugu, and Nasarawa states following vacancies created by deaths and diplomatic appointments.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared winners for several by-elections held on June 20, 2026, across multiple Nigerian states. In Ondo State, Professor Dayo Faduyile of the All Progressives Congress won the Ondo South Senatorial District seat with 68,474 votes, filling a vacancy created by Jimoh Ibrahim's appointment as Nigeria's Permanent Representative to the United Nations. Mutiu Agboke, the INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner for Ondo State, described the process as a testing ground for the 2027 general elections.
Other declared winners included Wogu Olaka Johnson of the Peoples Democratic Party, who won the Rivers South-East Senatorial District seat with 47,961 votes, and Rabiu Shuaibu of the All Progressives Congress, who secured the Dawakin Kudu/Warawa Federal Constituency seat in Kano State with 35,356 votes. In Kano, reports differed on the votes received by candidate Abubakar Yahaya-Muhammad, with one source citing 908 votes while others reported 98.
Simultaneous voting occurred in the Enugu North and Nasarawa North Senatorial Districts. The Enugu election, triggered by the death of Senator Okechukwu Ezea, saw participation from five parties, though voter turnout remained low. In Nasarawa, some polling units faced delays due to technical issues with biometric accreditation, and turnout was similarly low. Across the affected regions, officials generally described the processes as peaceful, despite varying turnout estimates in Ondo.
