Sindh Government Raises Karachi Water and Sewerage Charges

The Government of Sindh approved a tariff increase for water and sewerage charges in Karachi for the 2026-27 financial year, effective retrospectively from July 1, 2026. While one report cites an average increase of 7.5 percent, another specifies a 7.05 percent hike based on the Consumer Price Index. The revised rates apply to bulk, commercial, and residential consumers, with residential charges structured by plot size.

This adjustment marks the second major price increase in two years, following a 23 percent hike in September 2024. The Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation stated the revision aims to strengthen its revenue base to rehabilitate aging sewerage infrastructure and accommodate the city's growing population.

The price hike arrives as Karachi faces significant municipal failures. Frequent pumping station breakdowns and burst pipelines have left many neighborhoods with irregular or nonexistent water supplies. As a result, many residents are forced to purchase water from private tankers while continuing to pay official monthly bills.
