Magdalena Andersson Begins Exploratory Talks to Form Swedish Government

Speaker of the Swedish Parliament Andreas Norlén has appointed Magdalena Andersson, leader of the Social Democrats, as the first sonderingsperson to conduct exploratory talks to form a new government. Andersson has ten days to assemble a coalition capable of tolerating her as prime minister in a parliamentary vote.

Andersson faces an immediate deadlock between the Left Party and the Centre Party. The Left Party is demanding ministerial positions, while the Centre Party has refused to meet with them, stating they cannot sit in government together. Left Party leader Nooshi Dadgostar indicated a preference for a four-party government and expressed a willingness to force a new election if demands are not met.

Opposition leaders from the Moderates, Christian Democrats, and Liberals have signaled they will vote against any Social Democrat-led government. Christian Democrat leader Ebba Busch and Liberal leader Simona Mohamsson continue to advocate for a centre-right blue-and-yellow alternative.
