AMD Promotes EPYC Processors for Data Center Consolidation

AMD is marketing EPYC processors to help enterprises reduce data center footprints and operational costs while creating capacity for AI infrastructure.

AMD is promoting its EPYC processors as a solution for enterprise server consolidation, aiming to reduce the physical footprint and operational costs of data centers. By leveraging high-core density and energy efficiency, the company claims organizations can migrate workloads from legacy systems to fewer, more powerful servers.

AMD asserts that 14 EPYC 9965 servers can replace 100 older Intel Xeon Platinum 8280 dual CPU servers. This transition potentially reduces power consumption by 69% and lowers the three-year total cost of ownership by 41%. Such consolidation is intended to create essential headroom in power, space, and cooling to support new AI inference and training infrastructure.

DNSE Securities, a Vietnamese online stock brokerage, has already implemented this strategy. By deploying 3rd and 4th Gen AMD EPYC CPUs, the company halved its number of server racks and reduced power consumption per rack. Binh Nguyen, the company's Chief Technology Officer, stated that the servers allow the firm to maintain its current software operations while scaling to a much larger size.
