Bristol Bans Fast Fashion and High-Carbon Billboard Ads

Bristol City Council has banned fast fashion and high-carbon advertisements from council-owned billboards to discourage excessive consumption and promote climate-friendly behavior.

The Bristol City Council has become the first local government in the United Kingdom to ban fast fashion advertisements on council-owned billboards, including bus stops and specific city-center screens. The new policy prohibits advertisements that promote excessive consumption through influencer marketing, mass markdowns, and Black Friday sales.

The restrictions extend beyond clothing to include non-electric cars, SUVs, flights, cruise holidays, travel agents, and fossil fuel production businesses. Vapes are also banned unless they are part of a public health campaign. Council officers estimate the city will lose approximately £80,000 in annual income due to the restrictions.

Deputy council leader Heather Mack advocated for the ban as a green political priority. However, Conservative councillor John Goulandris opposed the measure, questioning the scope of the restrictions and specifically criticizing the ban on holiday advertisements. The council plans to further evaluate bans on unsustainable food following a working group report due by May 2027.
