China Condemns Taiwan Leader Lai Ching-te Over Independence Speech
The Chinese Foreign Ministry rejected a speech by Taiwan leader Lai Ching-te seeking external support for independence, asserting that reunification is an inevitable trend.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China condemned Taiwan leader Lai Ching-te following a speech he delivered in Taipei on Saturday. During the address, Lai sought external support for Taiwan independence, a move Beijing characterized as a separatist agenda disguised as democracy.
On Monday, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning asserted that the Chinese mainland and Taiwan belong to one China, describing this as the real status quo in the Taiwan Strait. Mao stated that Lai's actions cannot alter the historical and legal fact of Taiwan's belonging to China or stop the trend toward reunification.
Beijing further argued that Taiwan's return to China is a direct result of the outcomes of World War II and the subsequent post-war international order.
