George Galloway Contests London Byelection From Self-Exile
George Galloway is campaigning for the Holborn and St Pancras seat from abroad following a dispute with UK counter-terrorism police.
George Galloway, leader of the Workers Party of Britain, is contesting the byelection for the Holborn and St Pancras seat in London while remaining outside the United Kingdom. Galloway describes his current status as self-exile, a result of a year-long dispute following a September 2025 incident in which counter-terrorism police detained him and his wife for 11 hours at Gatwick airport.
Operating from abroad, Galloway has conducted a speaking tour through Moscow, South Africa, and Shanghai, using social media to engage with voters. His campaign platform focuses on opposition to NATO and the war in Ukraine, positioning him against candidates Sagal Abdi-Wali of the Labour Party and Zack Polanski of the Green Party.
Beyond the election, Galloway has threatened legal action against the Bank of Scotland after the institution closed his personal accounts in September 2026. The Australian Electoral Commission has confirmed that there is no residency requirement for citizens standing for parliament, facilitating his remote campaign.
