The New Hampshire Supreme Court announced that Chief Justice Gordon MacDonald began a medical leave of absence on July 31. In a statement issued Thursday, the court confirmed that MacDonald's medical providers determined he is unable to work, though they did not disclose specific diagnostic information or a forecast for the length of the leave.
Senior Associate Justice Patrick E. Donovan is currently acting in the stead of the Chief Justice where authorized by statute. Administrative responsibilities are being managed collectively by the remaining associate justices: Melissa Countway, Bryan Gould, and Daniel Will.
Court officials stated that this administrative structure ensures continuous operation, noting that it mirrors the system used between 2019 and 2021 when the court operated without a named Chief Justice. The court is continuing preparations for oral arguments, which are scheduled to resume on September 22.
