ECOWAS Mission Assesses Nigeria's 2027 Election Preparedness

The Economic Community of West African States deployed a fact-finding mission to Nigeria to evaluate electoral readiness and address concerns over political stability.

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) deployed a high-level Pre-Election Fact-Finding Mission to Nigeria from October 26 to 30, 2026. Led by former Sierra Leone Vice-President Victor Bockarie Foh, the delegation operated under the ECOWAS Conflict Prevention Framework to assess the country's preparedness for the 2027 general elections through consultations with government officials, political parties, and civil society.

During meetings in Abuja, Minister of Foreign Affairs Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu assured the mission of the Federal Government's commitment to conducting peaceful, transparent, and inclusive elections. However, Senator David Mark, National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), urged ECOWAS to warn the government and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) against actions that could trigger a crisis. Mark raised specific concerns regarding INEC's readiness, alleged government control of the judiciary, and threats of violence from the ruling party.

Victor Bockarie Foh stated that the mission is evaluating the political atmosphere and will compile its findings and recommendations into a report for the regional body. The mission's goal is to identify institutional challenges to ensure the effective conduct of the upcoming polls and maintain stability across West Africa.
