Blackstone Private Equity Head Joseph Baratta to Depart Firm

Joseph Baratta will leave his role as global head of private equity at Blackstone by the end of 2026 to pursue public service.

Joseph Baratta, the global head of private equity at Blackstone, is preparing to leave the firm by the end of 2026. Baratta spent nearly three decades at the company, during which time he oversaw the growth of the private-equity business from approximately $50 billion to $454 billion in assets under management.

Unlike the surprise exit of Nadeem Meghji, the global head of real estate, Baratta's departure has been discussed for six months. He intends to pursue a role in public service. Blackstone does not plan to fill his position, opting instead to maintain the current leadership of the units that previously reported to him.

The transition occurs as the private-equity industry faces significant headwinds, including rising interest rates that affect fundraising and carried interest. The sector is currently managing a backlog of over 33,000 unsold companies.
