China GDP Growth Slows to 4 Percent Fueling Stimulus Hopes

Goldman Sachs reports China's GDP growth slowed to 4 percent, falling below government targets and increasing pressure on the central bank to provide stimulus.

China's economic growth slowed to approximately 4 percent early in the third quarter, according to reports from Goldman Sachs Group Inc. This figure falls below the annual growth target of 4.5 to 5 percent set by the government. Chief China economist Hui Shan attributed the deceleration to demand-driven weakness, noting that the decline in July was particularly concerning because it affected sectors that had previously remained resilient.

Other financial institutions provided slightly higher estimates, with Macquarie Group tracking growth at 4.2 percent and BNP Paribas SA at 4.1 percent. Analysts suggest that if growth remains at or below 4 percent through September, the People's Bank of China may reduce the reserve requirement ratio or introduce new stimulus measures in the fourth quarter to inject liquidity into the economy.

Premier Li Qiang has urged the government to increase supportive measures to meet the annual targets. Conversely, official state media via the People's Daily defended the economy's performance, arguing that the government should prioritize technological innovation and sustainability over a sole focus on growth rates.
