Miriam González Durántez Launches Democracia21 Ahead of Spanish Snap Election
Lawyer Miriam González Durántez launched the centrist Democracia21 party to contest a snap general election called by Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez for November 29.
Lawyer Miriam González Durántez has launched Democracia21, a liberal centrist party designed as an alternative to Spain's dominant socialist and conservative factions. The party will contest the snap general election on November 29 in Madrid and Barcelona, campaigning on a platform of radical political cleanup to combat corruption, the removal of housing taxes for citizens under 35, and the maintenance of controlled immigration.
Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez called the snap election after right-wing and far-right parties, including the People's Party, blocked emergency rental market measures. The People's Party currently leads in electoral polls.
The election cycle is further strained by a Supreme Court decision to maintain the suspension of voting rights for tens of thousands of overseas descendants of exiles from the Franco dictatorship. The Spanish Socialist Workers' Party has denounced the ruling as an affront to democracy, with party leadership characterizing the move as a strike against the cornerstone of democratic rights.
