UK Economy Grows 0.1% in August Defying Forecasts

The UK economy grew by 0.1% in August, driven by production gains that offset declines in services and construction.

The United Kingdom economy grew by 0.1% in August, surpassing economist predictions of a 0.1% contraction. Data from the Office for National Statistics shows that a 0.8% increase in the production sector—including energy generation, mining, and manufacturing—counteracted a 0.3% decline in consumer-facing services and a 0.2% drop in construction.

On an annual basis, the economy expanded by 2.1%, marking the strongest growth rate since August 2022. John Healey, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, characterized the figures as evidence of British resilience amid global shocks caused by conflicts in Europe and the Middle East.

This growth occurs as the government prepares for the first budget of the current administration on October 28. The International Monetary Fund recently upgraded the UK's growth forecasts for 2026, although it cautioned that a modest slowdown is likely in 2027. The upcoming budget faces the challenge of addressing high government borrowing costs and supporting households impacted by inflation and rising energy prices.
