Oregon Democrats Expand Legislative Supermajority in 2026 Elections

Oregon Democrats are on track to expand supermajorities in the state legislature while incumbents retained all U.S. House seats and the governorship.

Democratic candidates in Oregon are on track to expand their supermajorities in both chambers of the state legislature following the November 4 elections. Current results indicate Democrats could claim 39 of 60 House seats and 19 of 30 Senate seats. This three-fifths majority allows the party to pass or increase taxes without Republican support. Democratic candidates Virginia Stapleton and Denise Krause lead competitive Senate races in Salem and Southern Oregon, respectively.

Julie Fahey, House Speaker of the Oregon House of Representatives, stated that voters trust Democrats to take action for those who are often left behind. In a notable shift, Representative Cyrus Javadi won re-election in the 32nd House District as a Democrat after previously serving as a Republican.

At the state executive level, Governor Tina Kotek won re-election against Republican challenger Christine Drazan. Federal representation remained stable as all six U.S. House incumbents secured victories. Maxine Dexter achieved the state's largest lead in the 3rd District, while Republican Cliff Bentz defended his seat in the 2nd District. U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley also won re-election with approximately 57% of the unofficial vote. Due to their seniority and the Democratic Senate majority, Senators Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley are positioned for potential committee chairmanships.
