Georgia Hits Record Early Turnout Ahead of Midterm Elections

Georgia reports record-shattering early voter turnout while Massachusetts officials predict participation will match 2022 levels as midterm elections begin.

Election officials in Georgia and Massachusetts report divergent turnout trends as the 2026 midterm elections commence. In Georgia, Brad Raffensperger announced that 2,828,147 people cast ballots during the early voting period, surpassing the previous record set in 2022. Georgia officials have implemented electronic poll pads with paper backups and will host observers from the Carter Center and the U.S. Department of Justice to ensure transparency. Following the vote, the state plans to conduct 20 risk-limiting audits across its congressional districts and statewide contests.

In Massachusetts, Secretary of the Commonwealth William Galvin predicts a total turnout of approximately 2.5 million voters, which would match the 2022 midterms. While more than 1.1 million people have already voted, Galvin noted contradictory indicators, including a decline in website traffic for polling place searches. He characterized the election as a referendum on the economy and the direction of the nation and the world.

Key contests include the Massachusetts gubernatorial race between Governor Maura Healey and Republican Mike Minogue. In Georgia, voters are deciding open seats for governor and lieutenant governor. Some analysts suggest Democrats in Georgia may hold an early lead of 250,000 to 300,000 votes due to high participation in metro Atlanta compared to rural regions.
