Russia and Arab League Seek Diplomatic End to Iran Conflict

Russian and Iranian foreign ministers held a telephone conversation on March 23, 2026, to discuss deteriorating security in the Persian Gulf. Sergey Lavrov, the Russian Foreign Minister, condemned potential United States and Israeli strikes against Iranian nuclear infrastructure, specifically naming the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant. Lavrov stated such attacks are categorically unacceptable, warning they would create catastrophic environmental consequences and risk the safety of Russian personnel.

Both ministers expressed concern that the conflict could expand into the Caspian Sea region. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi thanked the Russian leadership for providing diplomatic and humanitarian support. Russia pledged to advocate for an immediate end to hostilities and a diplomatic resolution at the United Nations Security Council.

Following these talks, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Georgy Borisenko and Arab League Deputy Secretary General Hossam Zaki conducted high-level consultations in Moscow on Tuesday. The officials discussed the negative impact of US and Israeli aggression against Iran on neighboring states. They emphasized the need for political solutions to ensure sustainable security, nuclear non-proliferation, and stable energy supplies. The discussions also covered the situation in Palestinian territories and other conflict zones across the Middle East and North Africa, with both parties agreeing on the urgency of shifting these conflicts to the diplomatic arena to prevent further escalation.
